As a U.S. Army veteran, teacher, school principal, and proud Mt. SAC alumnus, my commitment to this institution is deeply personal. Mt. SAC helped lay the foundation for my educational journey, providing me with opportunities that ultimately allowed me to transfer to the University of Southern California and later earn my master’s degree from Harvard University. My story is a testament to the life-changing opportunities that community colleges, and Mt. SAC in particular, can provide.
First, Mt. SAC must ensure that access leads to completion, transfer, and meaningful career opportunities. Enrollment growth is important, but success should be measured by whether students stay enrolled, complete courses, earn degrees or certificates, transfer, and enter strong career pathways. Mt. SAC’s current priorities emphasize first-year success, completion, transfer, tutoring, counseling, basic-needs support, and wraparound services. As a Trustee, I would use data to identify where students are struggling and support proven strategies, stronger K–12 partnerships, dual enrollment, transfer pathways, and workforce partnerships.
Second, Mt. SAC must protect its financial health while responsibly managing major investments, including Measure V. The Board must carefully review budgets, contracts, staffing, construction costs, and long-term obligations. Fiscal responsibility is not simply cutting costs; it is ensuring that resources are aligned with student needs and institutional priorities.
As a school principal, teacher, and U.S. Army veteran, I bring experience in data-driven decision-making, accountability, and public service. My guiding questions would be simple: Does this improve outcomes for students, and is it a responsible use of public funds? Those principles will guide every decision I make on the Mt. SAC Board.
